Beefday Beginnings

This is the card Cristy gave me.

We made plans to meet up with peeps in DUMBO for the Guiness and Oyster festival.

We got there early and wasted time walking around.

Here's a new myspace pic for you Cristy.

This is some reference to a picture Leti and Cristy always take. I don't know.

Be like a squirrel girl.

They made me model my new sweater. Thanks Leti (Javier and Tere).

When we got there they were offering 2 for 1 on the oysters.

That was good stuff.

We All Need Hobbies

Sofia and I had a little tasting party last night. By little I mean it was just her and myself. Oktoberfest(Märzen) beers were our selections of the evening. According to Beer Advocate:

Before refrigeration, it was nearly impossible to brew beer in the summer due to the hot weather and bacterial infections. Brewing ended with the coming of spring, and began again in the fall. Most were brewed in March (Märzen). These brews were kept in cold storage over the spring and summer months, or brewed at a higher gravity, so they’d keep. Märzenbier is full-bodied, rich, toasty, typically dark copper in colour with a medium to high alcohol content.

The domestics, Thomas Hooker, Samuel Adams, Brooklyn Brewery, and Stoudt's. We never got around to the Sam Adams or Brooklyn Brewery. Of the Domestics, we enjoyed Stoudt's the best.

The Germans, Hofbrau, Paulaner, Hacker-Pschorr, and Ayinger. Of these, Hacker-Pschorr and Ayinger were the best.

Overall our top pick is AYINGER. If you can pick it up soon. I would say try any of these, except Hofbrau, the weakest of the bunch.

Prost!

The Writer's Almanac with Garrison Keillor

-It was on this day in 1847 that Charlotte Brontë published her novel Jane Eyre.
-On this day in 1930, William Faulkner published what he later said was his favorite of his
own novels: As I Lay Dying. (Which I am reading now.)
-On this day in 1866, the Reno brothers, John and Simeon Reno, pulled off the first train
robbery in American history. They took $13,000 from an Ohio and Mississippi railroad train in
Jackson County, Indiana.

Comparing Apples and Oranges

Oct. 3 was Kyle's birthday. We met up with them for drinks. This was the only picture that didn't come out blurry. And MANNNNN is it fruity.

Brewwwwwwwwwskie!

I've been really slacking--beeradvocatewise. I don't know how I did'nt know about this:

Jaba da Hut

Pops, Chris, Jaba, Papa and Uncle Michael are hard at work putting siding up on Papa and Mama's house.

Look at that Jaba setup. I really wish I could be there. Comedy gold.

pollen on the beer bottles in the garbage cans

This is kind of old, but after the Chile fest, Ernest, Cristy, Sofia and I went to see Roman Candle. Of course I have my complaints, but overall it was a pretty rockin show. This is a crappy foto, sorry. We stood in the back, behind literally tens of people.

Porkchop y El Machuca.

We had pizza at midnight. I wanted to get the Newman, but opted for the cheaper Sicilian. Newman.

Cooperation

Today I am a very proud husband. Last night was Sofia's first shift as a Squad Leader at the Park Slope Food Coop. Well actually she was just filling in, she is a Co-Squad Leader and our usual leader was out for Yom Kippur. But I am still pretty proud. You should have seen her pushing people around; it was great. She even tried to cop an attitude with me, but I squelched that.

In other Food Coop news, there was almost a fight in the produce section last night. I know, I wouldn’t believe it either, but I saw it with my own two eyes. It was very exciting. I was minding my own business, stocking corn when all of a sudden I hear the sounds of shuffling sneakers behind me. Then the shouts. Luckily one of the guys’ girlfriends jumped in the middle and settled things down. They just about knocked over a beautiful display of tomatoes. Jerks.

and if you are chili millie, it is okay

Saturday was the annual Chile Pepper Fiesta @ the Brooklyn Botanic Garden.

They had all kinds of foods using chiles, I had the Brooklyn Chili, whatever that is. It was pretty good, although it needed a zap in the microwave.

Sofia had Corn Chowder I think. Her's was plenty hot and was the better of the two.

I was dissapointed at the event. They had a food tent and some music, then scattered among the garden there were tables and stands of chile stuff. Overall, kind of boring.

Sofia did score that yellow tote bag. Worthless.

Me and some chiles.

The most fun occured whilst walking around these lily ponds.

Oh and I got a tatoo.

We will not be attending next year. At least it did'nt rain. Well actually it did, a little.

Saturday tradition (today it fell on Sunday)

As some of you may know, we have waffles on Saturday. Since we had to do laundry yesterday morning, we had waffles today. Kristin was recently gifted a waffle iron and in her interest, I am releasing my waffle recipe.

2 cups flour
2 tablespoons sugar
1 tablespoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
Whisk these together

Seperately whisk together
1 3/4 cups milk (I use skim but it is probably even yummier with whole)
2 eggs
6 tablespoons of vegetable oil

Pour the wet ingredients over the dry and mix until pretty well combined, make sure there aren't big lumps. Then just pour onto the hot waffle iron.

Throw out the Bisquick.

Another dent in "family values," whoops.

Sister, you have laid long in the sun

Sick Sun Stuff.

The Pote

The Tallaricos came into town for a few hours. We dined at the deliciously old school El Pote.

These two are pretty much the same.

This is only the second time I've seen Jillian since she moved here. This is not entirely my fault though. She's been busy.

Their time in NY was swift, but they did their best to pump up the local economy.

Especially down in Chinatown, as shown here where Lisa is splitting up her goods. Sofia actually made out well.

Jillian's entry to her apt. It's no 492 Third Street, but it will do.

Return of the Goulash...oh and Don't Forget the Beer

Hi Aaron,

The Cafe Steinhof anniversary party with the Sound of Music
sing along will be held Monday September 25th this year, 7pm until
we are completely debauched.

Caleigh
Manager Cafe Steinhof

Just like last year around this time, Cafe Steinhof was offering free beer and goulash for their anniversary.

We were pretty much the first ones there and had to wait outside till 7pm.

At 7 there was a bum rush for the door. Kyle is lovin that roll.

I dove right in.

We shared our table with the kids.

Kyle totally wants a baby. Kinda puttin the cart in front of the horse buddy.

I hated this kid. (not really)

At 9 they started the Sound of Music sing-a-long.

Ladies man.

This kid kept buggin me. He looks like Pops with curly hair.

Christy and Ernest knew all the words. Jim knew none of em.

Luckily they had subtitles.

Eat it.

Here's my favorite part.

It's so romantic.
